15/12: My new Christmas single title is completely suitable for me – I do fall in love at Christmas every year! I fall in love all over again with the real meaning of Christmas, the songs, the cards, the home cooked meals, the Christmas decorations and the excitement that comes with it all! It is the only time throughout the year when we all have to slow down and realise what the meaning of life is to each one of us.
This Christmas will be extra special for me, since I will be celebrating it in Europe! I’m from a country where we enjoy Christmas time in the sun, water and a barbeque outside! So I am looking forward to experience the cold, the Christmas markets, ice skating outside and bringing all my favourite Christmas songs to the stage in the Netherlands.
It’s very special that for the first time I have my own, original Christmas song to share. After all – Christmas is the season for sharing!
Merry Christmas x
24/08: Finally my new afrikaans album has hit the shelves in South Africa! It has been 5 years since my last afrikaans recording, and I've really invested much time and energy into finding fresh, original songs aswell as writing a few tracks for the album! After the release of "This time I know", it was an obvious choice to once again release an afrikaans album for all my loyal afrikaans supporters, but I wanted to ensure that the atmosphere and quality of songs would be able to compare to the songs on the english album.
I flew to Belgium twice, to work with Lex de Groot (aswell as David Vervoord) and in Sweden with Anna and Samuel. It's hard to describe how proud it makes me feel hearing songs I composed and/or wrote lyrics for - when listening to the album now. I was involved in every process of it, even the bv's, styling, photographer choice and music video. I can't wait to hear the reaction of my supporters in and outside SA! It is all done for you guys and I hope you like it!
Thank you to the entire team involved behind the scenes, you make it all worth while. It was a great pleasure working with you, Lex!
Thank you!
7/05: Rehearsals for my first musical "Jesus Christ Superstar' has started!
I have now been rehearsing for two weeks and every day holds new challenges! There is so much to learn and adapt to. And we are in the heart of Cape Town. THE mountain is my morning view on the way to the theatre!
The music for this musical was composed by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics done by Tim Rice.
The director, Paul Warwick-Griffin is wonderful, aswell as the rest of the experienced and wonderful team who is guiding us and teaching us so much every day again.
It is much more physical than I had expected and for a change the focus on a vocal level has shifted slightly. From putting energy into a beautifully sang song, one is required to do a complete performance based on vocals aswell as acting skills.
I am learning that musical theatre, especially with a show such as this one, is about telling a story, as supposed to just singing songs.
I am learning to project my voice better and to walk naturally in a character with whom I can associate on a quite a few things, but with whom I'm still bonding and learning about every day. Let's just say Mary Magdalene is taking her time with me!
Hope to see you at the shows in Artscape Cape Town 12-28 May 2011 and Teatro Montecasino Jhb 3-26 June 2011.
I'm so proud to be working with Pieter Toerien Productions!
Best SA wishes from Cape Town
